| Phase One explains the solo origin stories of the modern Avengers. The story starts with Jacob Stark, Jason Stark, and Trent Washington in Afghanistan, with their families as part of S.H.I.E.L.D's 'Heroes of Tomorrow' Initiative. The story of Ken Barton is told alongside Chris Connor's backstory along with the newly founded friendship of Jenny Treveney and a young girl named Noelle Cruze. Jacob and Trent are eventually recruited into the S.H.I.E.L.D's Hero division where they join a squad called 'The Defenders', an initiative for newly found S.H.I.E.L.D Heroes to train and become the next Avengers, here they meet several heroes including Sharpshot and Warkiller.
